Although Twitter has received millions and millions of dollars in funding so far. They haven’t monetized the service with ads. This has left many of us wondering…what will a Twitter advertising platform look like and how will it affect us Twitter users?

Well, word on the street is that it will look something like Google’s.
At least that’s the general answer of Twitter’s plan, according to our sources.

The GOOD News is that it appears that ads will only show up in search results, which means users who don’t search for something won’t see them in their regular Twitter streams. Yay~

Here’s some ideas how the ads on Twitter may appear:

1. Ads will be attached to Twitter searches, a lot like Google’s original ads were in the early days. For example, a search for a “laptop,” may generate an ad for Dell.

2. The ads will use the Twitter format 140 or fewer characters and will be distributed via third-party software and services that use Twitter’s API. Those same services will have the option of displaying the ads, and Twitter will share revenue with those that do.

3. Twitter will connect with ad agencies and buyers to seed the ad program. Plans on moving to a self-serve model like Google’s, may roll out down the road.

This seems to be a simple way for Twitter to generate ad revenue, without upsetting us, the users. And I am okay with that, because we won’t see ads unless we use Twitter to “search” for something.

Some unanswered questions that have rolled in:

1. How will advertisers buy and price the ads on Twitter?
2. Will Twitter use a Google like cost-per-click model or something else?
3. Can Twitter refine searches to make them more useful to users?
4. How can Twitter gather enough data to make its targeting more meaningful like Google?

In closing, it doesn’t appear that Twitter will be putting all their eggs in one basket when it comes to an advertising plan. Twitter has mentioned in the past that future initiatives will begin with testing.

Nevertheless, keep an eye out for the ad platform to begin by the first half of 2010.

UPDATED on 2/24/2010: This is another variation…… “haha. This you???? http://kl.am/7DGS” to the Twitter Phishing Attack (DO NOT CLICK THE LINK IN YOUR DIRECT MESSAGES)A Special Thank you to Betty Fellows @BettyFellows for sharing this update with us.

As reported by Pete Cashmore from Mashable.com

A Twitter phishing attack is spreading rapidly today, attempting to obtain Twitter logins via Direct Messages. If you receive a message reading “lol, is this you”, and linking to a site called “bzpharma”, do not click the link.

Users who do click that link and enter their details are inadvertently letting spammers take over their accounts, which are then used to spam the same Direct Message to all their friends.

If you’re receiving these messages, your account is not compromised, but if you find you’re sending them, make sure to change your Twitter (Twitter) password immediately.

We’ve already notified Twitter of the issue.

Thanks to Laura Fitton (@pistachio), CEO/Founder of “Twitter appstore” Oneforty.com for giving us a heads up on this.

This is more an opinion of Google Buzz and a few things I believe about it compared to Twitter. My overall thoughts are that Google really needs to stick to handling their other projects rather than open others. I was not impressed with Google Wave. Is there a reason why Google did not just combine the services of the two, or would it have been too much on their servers?

K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid.) That is why I like Twitter. I like a lot of the applications designed for Twitter that I can use to filter and sort out my multiple accounts for the sites I run. Most of them are just as simple. Overall, I do not mind change. That is why I am not beefing about Facebook’s changes in the past week.

For Gmail users, that is great, but I do not use the service because I have my own email on my own servers. I like that it allows integration of several services, but for those who really do not care because they do not use Gmail, what is the use?

What happens if it flops? What happens if Gmail goes down? – which happens on occasion. Yes, Twitter has its down times, but it is a consistent service and they are not releasing insane and big changes. I am not certain how much it will attract more users. It might. I do know that it could slow things down and could become an inconvenience. However, if this flops for them, they could lose a lot more than just shutting down another failed service, they could alienate users.

I do not think Google could kill Twitter if they tried. In fact, I think Google needs to accept it, and throw some investment into the micro-blogging social network.

What are your thoughts?

ALERT: Twitter Discloses Attempt to Steal User Passwords

Being a former professional paperboy (not really) haha. Yes, I actually do have a background in the newspaper industry with sales and marketing and I’ve actually delivered papers before-those were the good ole days. Maybe you can relate? Regardless, I bet you are like me and can not stand hackers who steal peoples stuff. With that said, I wanted to share this post from the Wall Street Journal Blog and alert you of what’s going on. As always be safe.

As reported by By Jessica E. Vascellaro from the WSJ Blog

Twitter said it has identified a scheme to try to steal user account names and passwords and is asking some users to update their passwords as a result.

The micro-blogging service disclosed in a notice to developers late Tuesday that an unidentified person had been creating so-called “torrent” sites and forums for “a number of years” with the sole purpose of getting users to input user names and passwords the person could use to gain access to Twitter accounts.

The person “waited for the forums and sites to get popular and then used those exploits to get access to the username, email address, and password of every person who had signed up,” the notice stated.

Torrent sites are those that allow users to search for files sent through file-sharing service BitTorrent. Twitter didn’t identify any specific sites and forums it believes to be gathering the data.

The company said they “haven’t identified all of the forums involved (nor is it likely that we’ll be able to, since we don’t have any connection with them).” “But as a general rule, if you’ve signed up for a torrent forum or torrent site built by a third party, you should probably change your password there,” it read.

The attacks are one of several breaches that have affected the mircoblogging services in the past year. How many users were asked to reset their passwords remains unclear; a Twitter spokeswoman said the number of people affected is “very small.”

By Jim Finkle

BOSTON, Jan 22 (Reuters) – Twitter has temporarily disabled
one of the features on its website after a security researcher
warned of a programming flaw that left the login credentials of
its users vulnerable to hackers.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said in an email that the
company had temporarily cut off access to a feature that lets
users display Twitter updates on their websites by using Flash
technology.

“Our team has disabled the Flash widget while we look into
the problem,” Stone said.

Mike Bailey, a senior security analyst with Foreground
Security of Orlando, Florida, said that the problem exploits a
widely known vulnerability in Adobe Systems Inc’s (ADBE.O)
Flash programming language.

Adobe has told programmers how to address the
vulnerability, which was first discovered in 2006, Bailey
added, but noted the operators of many websites have failed to
respond to those warnings.

The microblogging site’s huge popularity has made it a
prime target for hackers looking to spread malicious software
to Twitter’s millions of users.

“As simple as the attack is, I’ve been finding them all
over the place,” Bailey said.

Officials with Adobe declined to comment.
