Twitter Tools Part 5
-by Al Ferretti and Skeeter Hansen
Twitter Tools (part 5 of 6): “Connect locally with Twitter”
Lately, we have heard that local business owners think Twitter is not for them. Their perception is that Twitter is mainly for those targeting the national or global market and not people in their town. This couldn’t be farther from the truth.
If you have a hometown business that primarily serves people in your local community, (not across the entire world) then check out the resourceful tools listed below to find and network with people in your local community.
Finding local Twitter users to connect with is great for networking, and also for getting relevant, real-time, local info. about things like jobs, news, politics, weather, food, and more
Geo Chirp
Geo Chirp works like this: on top of the page you have a Google Map; enter any location, and choose a radius below, from 1 to 50 miles. Then, adjust the number of tweets you want to see – from 5 to 25, and type in a keyword. The result is a very useful app, if you know what you’re looking for.
LocalTweeps
With LocalTweeps get found by tweeps near you, find tweeps near you is based on location or keyword
and post/browse local events and specials.
Nearby Tweets

NearbyTweets automatically determines where you are, and loads up a list of recent tweets and Twitter users within a specific radius. You can change location, radius, and add keywords, and the results are a lot more visually appealing and easier to navigate than Twitter’s search engine.
Tweetups
A tweetup is an offline meeting of people who have met and organized on Twitter, and they’re a great way to both find local Twitter users and also take Twitter-based networking to the next level.
Twtvite is a good way to find tweetups in your area:Twtvite is an invitation service built for Twitter. They have a large number of tweetups listed and make it easy to start organizing your own.
Twitter Search
One of the best ways to find local Twitter users is simply to search for them on Twitter Search. The advanced page of Twitter’s search engine has an option to search “Near this place.” You can simply enter your town and get a real-time stream of all the people tweeting from your location or near it.
Twellow

Twellow is like a yellow pages directory for Twitter, allowing you to search for Twitter users by topic or name. The TwellowHood part is a reverse location look up for the greater Twellow directory that lets you drill down into your town or city and find local Twitter users.
Twitterholic
Twitterholic is the web’s definitive list of the top Twitter users. It can also show you the top users in your local metro area.
Twitterlocal
TwitterLocal is a simple Adobe AIR application (meaning it will run on Windows, Mac, and Linux (linux)) with one purpose: finding and tracking tweets emanating from specific locations

Block Twitter Spam
-by Al Ferretti and Skeeter Hansen
Block Twitter Spam with TweetBlocker
Last week by suggestion from our good twitter pal Alexi, we tweeted out the “Double Barrel Super Soakers”, to help fend off those that choose to spam on Twitter. Now you can arm yourself with TweetBlocker too.
“Tweetblocker is a free resource for Twitter users and application developers. Using highly advanced filtering, we catalog and rank the top spammers on Twitter, allowing users to quickly and easily find spammers.”
TweetBlocker allows you to check for any twitter users spam grade. Grades are just like grade school, A-F. A being you are clean and F indicating that you may be a “spammer”.
Additionally, you can get a personal spam report which displays a detailed ranking of all the people you follow on twitter. You can easily block twitter users you think are spammers. (TweetBlocker uses twitter oAuth for athentication)
TweetBlocker also provides an API for application developers to retrieve a twitter users grade as well as report a user as spammer.

Twitters special guide
-by Al Ferretti and Skeeter Hansen
Twitter releases their guide “Twitter 101″
Skeeter and I joined Twitter in December of 2008. Since that time, Twitter has exploded in popularity across the globe. Surprisingly, there wasn’t an official guide by Twitter, until now.
The Twitter guide Twitter 101 for business covers; getting started, learn the lingo, best practices, cases studies, other resources and more.
In the beginning of the twitter 101, Twitter states:
“Every day, millions of people use Twitter to create, discover and share ideas with others. Now, people are turning to Twitter as an effective way to reach out to businesses, too. From local stores to big brands, and from brick-and-mortar to internet-based or service sector, people are finding great value in the connections they make with businesses on Twitter.”
Many people have expressed that they “don’t get it” when it comes to Twitter.
That was when we released our very own Twitter Success Guide 2.0.
