ALERT: Twitter Disables Widget Function
I just discovered this affected me and thought I would share with everyone.
As reported by Jim Finkle at Reuters.
UPDATE 1-Twitter cuts feature on site over security flaw
*Twitter disables ‘widget’ function
* Researcher had told Twitter passwords could be hacked
* Security flaw related to Adobe Flash
* Twitter co-founder says investigating problem
(Adds comment from Twitter CEO)
By Jim Finkle
BOSTON, Jan 22 (Reuters) – Twitter has temporarily disabled
one of the features on its website after a security researcher
warned of a programming flaw that left the login credentials of
its users vulnerable to hackers.
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said in an email that the
company had temporarily cut off access to a feature that lets
users display Twitter updates on their websites by using Flash
technology.
“Our team has disabled the Flash widget while we look into
the problem,” Stone said.
Mike Bailey, a senior security analyst with Foreground
Security of Orlando, Florida, said that the problem exploits a
widely known vulnerability in Adobe Systems Inc’s (ADBE.O)
Flash programming language.
Adobe has told programmers how to address the
vulnerability, which was first discovered in 2006, Bailey
added, but noted the operators of many websites have failed to
respond to those warnings.
The microblogging site’s huge popularity has made it a
prime target for hackers looking to spread malicious software
to Twitter’s millions of users.
“As simple as the attack is, I’ve been finding them all
over the place,” Bailey said.
Officials with Adobe declined to comment.

What is a verified Twitter Account
A number of you have asked us about Twitter verified accounts.
Here’s the scoop directly from Twitter….
To prevent identity confusion, Twitter is experimenting (beta testing) with a ‘Verified Account’ feature. We’re working to establish authenticity with people who deal with impersonation or identity confusion on a regular basis. Accounts with a Verified are the real thing!
What does it mean?
With this feature, you can easily see which accounts we know are ‘real’ and authentic. That means we’ve been in contact with the person or entity the account is representing and verified that it is approved. (This does not mean we have verified who, exactly, is writing the tweets.)
This also does not mean that accounts without the ‘Verified Account’ badge are fake. The vast majority of accounts on the system are not impersonators, and we don’t have the ability to check 100% of them. For now, we’ve only verified a handful of accounts to help with cases of mistaken identity or impersonation.
One thing you can do if we haven’t verified an account you’re wondering about is to check the official web site of the person and see if there’s a link back to their Twitter profile. (Again, lack of a link does not imply impersonation, either.)

Gold Rush for Twitter Usernames
UPDATE: TwitterCounter (twittercounter) has added a feature that lets you enter the twitter username you’re after and an email address, then be notified the moment it becomes available. How cool is that?
You’ll find the button underneath the graph and statistics section of the username’s TwitterCounter profile (Example: http://twittercounter.com/YourTwitterUsername) with a link that says “claim this username”.
GET READY~
Soon you may be able to get that twitter username you have wanted.
Word on the streets is that Twitter plans to release all inactive usernames and deleted usernames in the future but doesn’t have a date set yet.
Right now, policy says that no updates for six months qualifies an account as inactive — but thus far those idle usernames have stayed dormant and unavailable.
If you’ve got your eyes on an inactive username, get ready to take advantage of this opportunity when Twitter flips the switch. There’s likely to be a gold rush for the really hot ones.
Check back often, we’ll update as soon as we hear more or when the names are up for grabs.

Life’s most persistent and urgent question is
I found a great post by Biz Stone from Twitter that I thought everyone will appreciate today and beyond. Here it is..
“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” This quote made famous by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. strikes at the heart of what it means to be a mindful participant in any community. On an international level this week, people are joining forces to heal Haiti. Together, we’re proving that we’re wired to help.
On Monday, the Twitter offices will be closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. People all over the United States are urged to honor Dr. King’s legacy by making this holiday a national day of service. The Corporation for National Community Service has set up a web site to help us find a volunteer opportunity in our local community.
The folks behind the @ServeDotGov Twitter account and serve.gov site want to hear about your efforts. If you find a volunteer opportunity that interests you, go for it! Tweet about your experience as you learn about different ways to get involved, volunteer in your neighborhood or town, and be sure to add #MLKDay to spread the word.
Please leave us your comments and suggestions regarding “What are you doing for others”?
Happy Martin Luther King Day~
