What is Twitter and Why Twitter was Started?

I wanted to share part of this story with you that was posted on the Twitter blog from The Sunday Times December 27, 2009. Now when people ask you what is Twitter you will know what to tell them.

Biz Stone, a co-founder of Twitter writes about…

What is Twitter? Primarily Twitter Serves as a Real-Time Information Network Powered by People.

My co-founder Evan Williams and I have spent the past 10 years developing large systems that allow people to express themselves and communicate openly. We are united in our belief that software has the ability to augment humanity in productive and meaningful ways.

Many people have assumed that Twitter is just another social network, some kind of micro-blogging service, or both. It can be these things but primarily Twitter serves as a real-time information network powered by people around the world discovering what’s happening and sharing the news. The Iranian election was the most discussed issue on Twitter in the final year of a decade defined by advancements in information access.

In the new year, Twitter will begin supporting a billion search queries a day. We will be delivering several billion tweets per hour to users around the world. These are figures we did not anticipate when we founded the company in 2007.

Looking back, the year is a blur, but that one summer morning remains fixed in my memory because it is a powerful reminder of why we find it meaningful to develop technology. Click Here for the full story

How and why you should use #Hashtags with Twitter

One of the most complex features of Twitter for new users to understand is the hashtag.

How and why you should use #Hashtags with Twitter

Hashtags are used to identify a specific topic with a hash symbol (“#”) at the start of the word you want to identify. The one hashtag most Twitter users are aware of is #followfriday which helps spread information on other Twitter users.

The hashtag is a favorite tool for business owners, conferences and event organizers, but it’s also a way for Twitter users to organize themselves. Many people append a certain hashtag to tweets about a topic, it becomes easier to find that topic in search, and more likely the topic will appear in Twitter’s Trending Topics.

I created a hashtag training video earlier in the year to teach people how to use hashtags in tweets.

So how do you make sense of all this hashtag madness? By going through the art of the hashtag step-by-step, of course. This short video will give you details how to use hashtags in your tweet and why. Just be sure not to over use your new hashtag wisdom.

Have a tip to share on hashtags or a unique way you utilize them? Have a success story about how hashtags helped you. Be sure to share with everyone in the comments.
